2010 Burton [ak] Hybrid Jacket

Hands down the ultimate thermal layering jacket. The [ak] Hybrid is a combination of synthetic fleece and synthetic quilted insulation. It's patterned to keep your core warmer, while keeping more air-permeability in high perspiration zones. I pretty much live in this garment most of the winter. You should too.

ICON Trucks

The last 'real' trucks made in the U.S.A., no really, HANDMADE in L.A. They don't build them like this anymore - actually they never built them like this. ICON has taken a good thing to an entirely different level. I love the throwback to a more simplistic approach, yet the attention to detail and modern tech is insane. These trucks are completely hand-built to the highest standards. They offer two trim packages; Old school & New school!!

Personally, I'll take a 'new school' FJ43 long wheelbase in matte black please..

Palmer West of Aether, head spinning & pondering why he doesn't have one.

As always perfection comes at a price, be prepared for shock and awe..
Props to Jonathan Ward for doing everything 'right'.

Heat Wave

B.C. is currently in the middle of the hottest consecutive week on record since 1880(!) It's been over 40 degrees (c) every day.

Over 300 forest fires are already burning in B.C., and I'm sure there is more to come. Check out this photo, looking north up the Pemberton valley.

2010 Burton [ak] BK Insulator

The BK Insulator is a must-have. In winter I run a BK more than any other garment. It's the go-to 6 days a week. On the -really- cold days, I even run it as my thermal layer under a Hover jacket, and it works great. It's super buttery soft, compressible and lightweight, with premium goose-down insulation. Two hand pockets, chest pocket, lower hem cinch, and pit zips.
That's all you need.

2010 YZ250F
Typical. No sooner than you break-in your new bike, and they're already announcing the new & improved model. Next year's bike gets a new frame, and some changes to the motor. Although EFI is not included, which is just fine with me.

Top Gear Motohome racing!
This post is dedicated to Neil Hartmann and the Car Danchi posse! Neil is about two thousand hours into editing Car Danchi 4 right now. Thought this might offer a good laugh, and maybe inspiration for Car Danchi 5 (?).

If you don't yet know who or what the Car Danchi crew is all about, check out the Car Danchi 3 Trailer...

2009 Yamaha YZ250F

It's official. My new whip is not a Honda... For those that don't know, it's a pretty big deal to 'change teams'. My first bike was a Honda, and my second, and my third, and my forth & fifth, plus my lawn mower & weed-eater. Everything is red. As it always has been. Until now.

Right out of the box, this bike rips. Stoked to be back on a 250cc.
I'll post a tuning and set up update soon.

2010 Burton [ak] Hover Jacket
The new AK Hover Jacket has gone to the next level. It's a 3L Proshell Gore-tex laminate with a high performance 70 denier Nylon face, combined with the ultralight 'kaya' woven backer on the inside. This jacket is ideal for backcountry use with the highest possible breathability, and two big reach across cargo pockets (fully accessible while wearing a backpack) that have external bellows, so the volume of the loaded pockets stays on the outside. You can literally put a DVcam in the pocket, and forget it's there! This is a minimalist / purpose built high performance snowboarding shell, if you're looking for the bells and whistles feature package, look elsewhere...

This is the best snowboarding shell on-snow for 2010.
Will hit global retail next month.

Mount Currie
Mount Currie rises directly above Pemberton, and is only accessible by helicopter or by a seriously ambitious boot pack straight up the face. There are about 5 good lines that are ridable at certain times of the year.  Ironically, out of all the trips I've taken over the years - Currie is the biggest vertical drop I've ever done; It's about 7500 vert. ft. / 2,200 vert. meters, and with most of that over 45 degrees, it's one of the steepest continuous descents in North America.

Can you spot the rideable lines? You can scope those lines in more detail on the FYI contact page. Both of the diagonal couloir's just lookers left of center are good to go, as well as the 'Y' / dogleg lines to the right of center. No matter where you've been before, Currie is a special descent on a good day. It's too gnarly for heli-ski outfits to drop clients on Currie. You have to assemble a solid group and charter your own helicopter directly. You get dropped off, and you are on your own. Just you and your friends..  There is no pick-up, you ride it out all the way to the valley floor.

This was my initial introduction to Pemberton, and still just represents the tip of the iceberg with respect to the backcountry terrain in the area.

Nine Inch Nails

NIN was one of dozens of bands that played last year at the Pemberton Festival.

Was surreal to say the least, to see a band like this playing with Mount Currie as the backdrop.

You have to understand, Pemberton B.C. has a population of 3000 on a busy day, with just one stoplight. We had 45,000 people arrive along with bands like Coldplay, Jay-Z, Tom Petty and Nine Inch Nails(!!) The next Pemberton Festival is scheduled for summer 2010.

Big Wave Surfing.

This is one of my favorite snowboarding pics. This shot was taken a couple years back. That's my bro Kevin Smith out in front, with me following in the Yellow. Kev is the guy who first introduced me to Pemberton back in about 2000, with a spicy heli drop on Mount Currie. This photo was Kev's first heli drop after breaking his neck in a summer lake accident. He was initially paralyzed, and had a long, slow and difficult recovery to get back to this day. We found this huge windlip wave about halfway down, and hit it tandem. Our mutual bro, Chris Ankeny nailed the shot.

Yves Rossy
Yves Rossy is my new hero. What kid hasn't dreamed of being able to fly around like a mini fighter plane? Yves is a Swiss ex-military fighter pilot, who now is a commercial airline pilot for Swiss-Air. He also skydives for fun - so it was a natural progression to combine his knowledge of his various diciplines to take his game to the next level. He saw the potential for self-flight, and set out to make his vision a reality. Yves is clearly -also- a talented Industrial Designer and Mechanical Engineer. He designed, developed and built one very innovative piece of kit.

This rig has 4 micro jet engines, 2 parachutes, a flotation device (in case of an unplanned water landing), and carries enough fuel for over 20 minutes of flight time. You literally fly it through body language. Yves has a fuel guage, altimeter and throttle control - that's it. Steering is controlled by body movement. Your body IS the plane and you are flying by 'active aerodynamics'.

James Bond? Ironman? Merely movies with big special effects budgets - this is the real deal. I was in Paris last year, and watched Mr. Rossy fly over the English Channel live on TV, and it was one of the most inspired feats of human accomplishment i've seen in a long time.

Yves Rossy has actually realized what millions of kids have dreamed of... and forgot.

Check out this year's centerpiece for the Goodwood Festival of Speed(!) That's an R8 doing the moonshot, and a vintage Audi streamliner headed for Mars. The Festival is happening right now, in West Sussex England.

Camper footwear

CAMPER is from Spain. We don't do any design work with Camper, but we really like their clean, low-key style. Both Susanna and I run Campers on occasion..
